IDEAS IN SHELF
Tino Cobianchi
Monsignor Cesare Pasini, Prefect of the Vatican Library, has collected in The Fathers of the Church of the lessons patrology held to a theology course for lay people. The Milanese priest says in the introduction the reasons that led him to publish the volume and the criteria used in selecting themes and texts that "could make sense of the variety and richness of literary genres, styles, people, of the arguments." In the author's voice explaining historical events, recalls the events and explains terms, alongside that of the Fathers with their writings complement and complete the topic. In the history of the Fathers from the first century to the middle of the fifth with a look at the development of the Church of Milan, the author starts with the works of Clement of Rome and Ignatius of Antioch and the "problems that emerge in the early Christian communities" in terms of units. Pasini Bishop then presents the Didache (the little pearl which "the essential elements for proper initiation Christian "), and the apologetic works written for" others to make sense of the Christian faith. " The struggle against Gnosticism led by Irenaeus of Lyons and his teaching, a nod "to the Milanese episcopal succession" are the topics addressed by Pasini before focusing on Tertullian and Cyprian and the beginnings of Christian literature. The work, how to do exegesis and theology of Origen ("with a formidable intellect and a wonderful speculative reading skills and intellectual development") are analyzed by Msgr. Pasini recounts that soon after, through the figures of Antonio, and Martin of the Desert Fathers, the rise of monastic life forms and cenobitic hermit. Inspired by sull'arianesimo issues, the author addresses the theological issues raised by the Council of Nicaea in 325 Athanasius of action in defense of "the Church's independence from political power." Pasini therefore has two columns of orthodoxy: Basil of Caesarea, the great writer and organizer of the monastic life in Cappadocia, Gregory of Nazianzus "admirable clarity and precision of formulations and poet. A block of four chapters is devoted to the figure, the events and the writings of St. Ambrose. The prefect of the Vatican Library pick up the thread of the history of the Church recalls the role of Milan Denys of the confessor and the usurper Absinthe, up to the election of Bishop Ambrose. Pasini recounts the life of the patron saint of Milan and his first steps in the episcopal ministry "in the line of faith of the Council of Nicaea," analyzes his preaching "totally soaked and emphasis on the Scriptures" and reminds her untiring efforts in complex civil and social events of the time . Very beautiful are the emphases of Msgr. Pasini on the writings of virgins Ambrosian as education where you can get "more general information on the teaching of Ambrose on the issue of spirituality" and the beautiful (and current) account (and lesson) on freedom contained in a letter to Simpliciano: "you think might free those who buy votes with money, those seeking the applause of the people more than the opinion of the sages? [...] Fact, I believe that freedom is not a gift, but a virtue that is not granted by the votes of others, but is claimed and owned by their greatness of soul. " The ratio of Ambrose, Augustine Simplicity and devoted a chapter in which they reconstructed the events of "important people and events of the Church of Milan from the conversion of the future bishop of Hippo until his baptism, focusing on issues (Manichaeism and Pelagianism Donatism ) in which Augustine came "with his genius and the power of his word, be sure to take a brief look on his most important works: The Confessions, The City of God and The Trinity. The peculiarities, differences and the exegetical tradition and Christological schools of Alexandria and Antioch, Constantinople, which was added, the role of John Chrysostom ("golden mouth for his high oratorical ability"), Cyril of Alexandria ("great theologian, who expressed in his many writings and patristic biblical science "), the teaching of John of Damascus and the issues addressed by him (the Dormition of Mary, the worship of images and Islam) are other topics covered by Pasini along with" valence Ecumenical Church of the Fathers. " Finally, the author makes some considerations on the figure of St. Ambrose in the patristic age, the importance of its role in ecumenical and its contribution to the Vatican doctrinal. The Fathers of the Church is a work useful and beautiful. Because it is useful to know the birth, the events and issues of early Christianity with particular attention to the early development of the faith in Milan. Bella because Msgr. Cesare Pasini is a wise and competent leadership that leads the reader into the fascinating world of the Fathers succeeded in arousing interest in their lives, their works and their testimony. The summary that best describes the result which can be substantial appreciate and enjoy the careful reading of the work of Msgr. Pasini mutuiamo the passage of a speech to the youth of Basil of Caesarea, our words because we do brilliantly capture the essence, the goodness and value of the book, "like bees, unlike the other animals that are confined to the enjoyment of perfume and color of the flowers, they also know how to make honey, so those who in these writings not only seek pleasure and enjoyment, they can also derive some utility for the soul.
